Fund Raiser on behalf of the Franciscan Refuge TRANSFORMER APPEAL A fun evening was had by all at the La Drova home of John and Chrissy Wilson to celebrate St. Andrews Night. All guests were asked to wear blue and white. Our hosts prepared a traditional Scottish meal of soup, haggis, neeps and tatties followed by a delicious raspberry and cream dessert. Prior to the meal there was a quick quiz to discover who knew what about ‘All things Scottish’. Once the meal was over there was Scottish country dancing, a sing song and then an auction. The auctioneer was Alan Higgins and he encouraged all those present to dig deep for the goods on offer. An amazing 260.15 was made on behalf of the Transformer Appeal plus a lot of fun was had by all those in attendance. ******** Christmas Raffle See the winning numbers by clicking here

The volunteers of The Original Charity Shop and Library, Javea (Arenal area) pride themselves on raising considerable funds for worthwhile local causes. In 2011 we were able to donate over 66,000 euros, which was raised through generous donations or through our clients selling goods on a commission basis. Our custom built English language library can be found in Javea Park and has some 14,500 books together with talking books on cassettes and CDs, which are all on loan for a small subscription. We also sell quality greeting cards, gift wrap, etc.

HERE ARE JUST SOME OF THE GOOD CAUSES THAT WE DONATE TO INDEX Our secretary Aileen Stiefel arranged a visit to the Franciscan Refuge with the German Press, Costa Blanca Zeitung. Their reporter Antje Ehlebracht spent several hours with the residents and Brothers and had a very enjoyable afternoon. Whilst she was there, Father Guillermo showed her around the entire complex. Visiting both the existing dormitories and facilities then they toured the super new buildings with 2/3 bedded ensuite rooms that unfortunately, cannot be used due to the lack of electricity. After viewing all of the new build, which includes a state of the art kitchen, gymnasium, hospital facilities plus overnight accommodation for visitors, they were entertained to coffee and cakes. Her visit resulted in a three page spread in the Costa Blanca Zeitung asking for help from their readers , to raise cash for the Transformer Appeal. For more information about the refuge, see our Events page. The Original Charity Shop and Library are very keen in helping, where ever possible, to assist in the eventual opening of this Day Centre in Javea Pueblo. The Centre will be used by physically and mentally disabled people of all ages, many of which will be Alzheimer sufferers. This facility has been needed in Javea for a very long time. In addition to paying for the installation of a bathroom and a complete facility of multi showers, sinks and toilets, we have recently donated 5,000 euros to purchase the commercial cooker/oven to allow the day visitors to have a hot meal. This donation has been made in the name of the late Sally Ann Barrell. Her husband Richard had asked for donations in lieu of flowers at her funeral and we have been very happy to add the outstanding amount needed to make this purchase. We have also donated another 5000 euros to complete the outstanding work on the kitchen installation. We have been working together with the Roundabout Charity Shop in Javea Port to hopefully ensure that the centre opens its doors by late October 2009. We also help the children in the Gandia Preventorio (orphanage). We have recently supplied them with mobile hair dressing sinks to enable the washing of the children's hair along with 5 Philips hair dryers. This Christmas we will also be giving them 500 euros of Carrefour vouchers to purchase hygiene products and other necessary requirements. Our involvement with the Raquel Paya School for children with severe mental or physical disabilities has been long standing, over the years. We have installed a hydrotherapy pool, a complete working kitchen to allow the older students to learn life skills, and provided safety curtains, lighting, etc - for their stage. We also paid for a soft floor for safe play, a sensory room for deaf/blind children and for the installation of air con - hot and cold - throughout the whole school. Every year, we make sure Santa visits with a brilliant present for all of the 60plus children attending there.
Is a day centre for mentally and
physically disabled adults from the whole of the Marina Alta. We were also able to fund the fitting of the commercial type kitchen with all mod cons. This then allowed them, together with the staff, to have a hot meal daily. The kitchen has made an incredible difference to their lives and it is something we are extremely proud of. Since this the kitchen was fitted they have made a communal area alongside with tables and chairs where they can all meet and chat over a nice meal. This area has also turned into a bit of a crafts room for them all. We have repeatedly provided specialist equipment as and when requested to the Denia Hospital. We make annual donations to APASA, the dog and cat refuge. We donated one week’s takings to the AECC Breast Scanner Appeal - some 4,000 euros. We have donated 2,000 euros to the Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence. We have been happy to help MABS, the cancer care organisation, whenever they have asked us and also take donations on their behalf. This year we paid for the information folders that are given to newly diagnosed patients and provided raffle prizes for their fund raising events. We have also donated large raffle prizes on behalf of the Meningitis trust. We have supplied specialist beds, equipment, a complete doctors surgery and lots more to the Asilo Hermanos Cholbi (Nursing Home). SPAMA animal refuge, Gandia - throughout the year we take donations to sell on behalf of the organisation. |
